Knee Replacement Quote Checklist for Colombia: What Should Be in Writing?

A practical checklist for comparing a Colombian knee replacement package without treating the headline price as the whole quote.

Planning note: This is patient-side educational information, not a diagnosis, surgical recommendation or personal flight clearance. Your treating surgeon must make the clinical decisions for your case.

The headline number is the least interesting part of the quote

A knee replacement proposal is only useful when you can tell what the number buys. Two providers can both say “total knee replacement” and still be pricing different facility time, different implant assumptions, different inpatient stays, different rehabilitation blocks and different complication terms.

For a patient traveling to Colombia, the practical goal is not to force every provider into an identical package. It is to make the differences visible before you book flights. Ask for a written proposal. If something is discussed only in WhatsApp, ask the coordinator to add it to the written package or confirm it in one message you can save.

The medical and facility lines to look for

At minimum, identify the surgeon or professional fee, assistant fees if applicable, anesthesia, operating room or hospital/facility fee, the knee implant itself, inpatient nights, routine inpatient medications and dressings, and the first block of physiotherapy.

Do not assume “all-inclusive” answers these questions. It is a marketing phrase, not a standardized billing category. A useful quote names what is included and what triggers an extra charge. Examples include an extra hospital night, unexpected medical clearance, additional imaging, blood products, a change in implant requirement, or treatment of a complication.

The implant line deserves its own sentence

Ask which manufacturer and product family the surgeon expects to use, whether fixation is planned as cemented, cementless or hybrid, and whether the final selection can change intraoperatively. AAOS registry materials note that knee arthroplasty involves choices about articulation, stabilizing mechanisms, patellar resurfacing and fixation.

You are not trying to choose an implant from a catalog yourself. You are trying to make sure “implant included” means a defined device plan rather than an unspecified allowance. In Colombia, medical-device registrations can be checked through INVIMA’s public registry tools.

Recovery is part of the price even when it is billed elsewhere

Write down how many inpatient nights are included, when physiotherapy starts, how many outpatient sessions are included, whether the patient supplies a walker or other aids, and what follow-up is included before flight clearance.

If lodging, transportation or a recovery house is sold separately, keep it separate in your budget. That makes the surgical quote easier to compare and prevents travel services from disguising the medical price.

The terms people discover too late

Get the deposit amount, payment schedule, accepted payment methods, rescheduling policy, cancellation policy, and complication/revision language before paying. “Revision included” is not useful unless the document says what event qualifies, what costs are covered, how long the policy lasts, and whether travel is excluded.

A lower quote with undefined terms is not automatically a worse quote. It is simply an incomplete comparison until those questions are answered.

Questions worth sending the provider

  1. What implant manufacturer and product family are you planning for my case?
  2. Exactly how many hospital nights and physiotherapy sessions are included?
  3. What costs can be added after the written quote is issued?
  4. What does the complication or revision policy cover, and for how long?
  5. What records will I receive before I fly home?
