Identify the home team before travel
Depending on the procedure, that may include a primary-care clinician, orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist, wound-care clinician, or imaging center. Ask whether they are comfortable participating in follow-up after surgery performed abroad and what records they want.
Collect the operative documentation
Request the operative report, discharge summary, diagnosis, exact procedure, anesthesia summary when relevant, and any complications. If an implant, graft, anchor, plate, screw, or other device was used, ask for identifying information.
Transfer imaging in a usable format
Do not rely only on screenshots of X-rays. Ask for digital imaging and reports in a format your home system can open or import. Note the dates when repeat X-rays, MRI, or other imaging are expected.
Bring the rehabilitation protocol
Your physical therapist should know weight-bearing status, range-of-motion limits, brace or sling use, exercise progression, and surgeon-specific milestones. If the protocol changes at a particular week, make that explicit.
Clarify remote follow-up
Ask whether the Colombian surgeon will review wound photos or imaging remotely, through what channel, and for how long. Know the difference between routine questions and symptoms that require immediate local evaluation.
Know when care must become local
CDC medical-tourism guidance emphasizes that complications can require treatment after the traveler returns home. Make sure you have a local plan for urgent symptoms rather than assuming every problem can be handled by messaging the overseas clinic.
