ACL Reconstruction in Colombia: What to Ask About Graft, Meniscus and Rehab

The high-value questions behind an ACL surgery quote: graft choice, associated meniscus work, rehabilitation and realistic return-to-sport timing.

Planning note: This is patient-side educational information, not a diagnosis, surgical recommendation or personal flight clearance. Your treating surgeon must make the clinical decisions for your case.

An ACL quote needs more detail than “arthroscopy”

ACL reconstruction is not one standardized package. The graft choice, associated meniscus or cartilage work, surgeon technique and rehabilitation plan all affect the actual episode of care.

If the MRI shows an ACL tear plus a meniscus injury, ask whether the surgeon expects repair, partial meniscectomy or no meniscal procedure. That decision can change early weight-bearing and rehab even if the ACL reconstruction itself is unchanged.

Ask what graft is planned and why

AAOS patient guidance distinguishes autograft, using your own tissue, from allograft, using donor tissue, and notes that allograft may carry higher failure risk in some younger or highly active patients. Autograft options also differ.

The useful question is not “Which graft is best?” in the abstract. Ask which graft the surgeon recommends for your age, sport, goals and prior surgery, and what trade-offs drove that recommendation.

Rehab is months long even when the trip is short

An international ACL trip may require only a relatively short stay compared with joint replacement, but rehabilitation continues for many months. AAOS guidance describes recovery commonly in the 6–12 month range, with return to sport individualized.

Before traveling, identify the physical therapist who will take over at home and make sure the Colombian surgeon will provide a written protocol, operative report and any restrictions created by associated meniscus work.

A cheap package with no rehab handoff is incomplete

Ask what post-operative physiotherapy occurs in Colombia, when your home program starts, how progress is measured and when telehealth follow-up occurs. If return-to-sport testing is part of the surgeon’s protocol, find out where you will complete it.

The flight home is one event. The outcome depends on the months after it.

Questions worth sending the provider

  1. What graft do you recommend for me and why?
  2. Do you expect meniscus repair or another associated procedure?
  3. How does that change weight-bearing and range-of-motion restrictions?
  4. What written rehab protocol will I take home?
  5. What criteria, not just calendar time, do you use for return to sport?
