Shoulder Surgery in Colombia: Replacement, Reverse Replacement or Rotator Cuff Repair?

Why shoulder surgery quotes can be meaningless until the underlying procedure and rehabilitation restrictions are clearly defined.

Planning note: This is patient-side educational information, not a diagnosis, surgical recommendation or personal flight clearance. Your treating surgeon must make the clinical decisions for your case.

“Shoulder surgery” covers very different operations

A rotator cuff repair, anatomic total shoulder replacement and reverse total shoulder replacement solve different problems and create different recovery plans. AAOS registry materials distinguish anatomic shoulder arthroplasty from reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, where the ball-and-socket orientation is reversed.

Do not compare prices until the surgeon has named the operation being recommended and explained the diagnosis driving it.

Why reverse versus anatomic matters

The condition of the rotator cuff, bone, joint surfaces and other anatomy influences which reconstruction is appropriate. A reverse replacement is not simply a newer or more expensive version of an anatomic replacement.

Ask the surgeon to show you the imaging and explain what structure is failing. You should be able to understand the basic reason for the proposed procedure without having to accept a branded implant pitch.

Rotator cuff repair creates a different travel problem

A cuff repair may mean less inpatient care than a joint replacement, but the arm is commonly protected for a prolonged period and rehabilitation is carefully staged. That can make luggage, airport movement, dressing and daily tasks surprisingly difficult.

Plan the flight and accommodation around one-handed function. A companion may be valuable even when the surgery itself is outpatient or short-stay.

Get the rehab restrictions in writing

Shoulder rehabilitation can be damaged by doing too much too soon just as surely as it can be slowed by doing too little. Ask for a written protocol that your physical therapist at home can follow.

The international handoff should state sling use, passive versus active motion timing, lifting restrictions and follow-up milestones specific to your operation.

Questions worth sending the provider

  1. What exact shoulder procedure are you recommending and why?
  2. Is the rotator cuff intact, reparable or part of the reason for replacement?
  3. If replacement is planned, is it anatomic or reverse?
  4. What restrictions will I have during the trip home?
  5. Can you provide a written rehab protocol for my therapist at home?
