Start with the route from car to bed
Ask for photos or video of the actual entry path. Look for curbs, exterior steps, elevator access, narrow doors, steep ramps, and long corridors. “Accessible” in a listing can mean many things, so verify the details that matter to your operation.
Bathroom safety matters
A walk-in shower, stable grab points, nonslip surfaces, sufficient space for assistance, and a toilet height you can manage may matter more than the view. Ask your clinical team whether you need a shower chair or other temporary equipment.
Think about sleeping and transfers
After joint or spine procedures, getting in and out of a very low bed can be difficult. After shoulder surgery, one-handed transfers may be awkward. Ask about bed height, firmness, room layout, and whether a companion can sleep nearby.
Choose proximity over nightlife
A recovery stay should minimize unnecessary travel to the surgeon, therapy, imaging, and pharmacy. Being close to restaurants is less important if you cannot comfortably walk to them. Grocery delivery and simple kitchen access can be more useful.
Plan for mobility devices
Confirm that a walker fits through doors and around the bed, that crutches can be stored without creating a fall hazard, and that the building's elevator is reliably available. If you may need a wheelchair temporarily, check dimensions in advance.
Keep an extension option
Medical recovery does not always follow the reservation calendar. Ask whether the stay can be extended and what happens if the exact unit is unavailable. A backup nearby is preferable to moving across the city while newly post-operative.
