Ask for the protocol before surgery
Before paying a deposit, ask whether the surgeon uses a written rehabilitation protocol for your operation. It should clarify early movement, weight-bearing status, braces or slings, range-of-motion restrictions, and the expected progression. That information also helps you estimate how much assistance and local therapy you will need.
Know what the package includes
Some medical-travel packages mention “therapy” without stating the number or type of sessions. Ask how many sessions are included, whether they occur in the hospital, clinic, hotel, or an independent therapy center, and who pays for extra visits.
Rehab differs by operation
A knee replacement often emphasizes early walking and range of motion, an ACL reconstruction follows graft-protection and strength milestones, and a rotator-cuff repair may restrict shoulder movement according to tendon healing. Avoid generic “orthopedic rehab” plans that ignore the procedure.
Make the handoff before you leave home
If possible, identify your home physical therapist before traveling. Ask the Colombian surgeon what documentation that therapist will need and whether the two teams can communicate if questions arise.
Track function, not just pain
Pain is only one recovery measure. Depending on the operation, therapists may follow swelling, range of motion, gait, strength, balance, transfers, stair safety, and adherence to restrictions. Ask what milestones the surgeon expects before you travel.
Leave with complete documentation
Bring the operative report, protocol, restrictions, assistive-device instructions, medication list, and the next surgical follow-up date. If the operation involved an implant or graft, include those details as well.
