Shoulder Surgery in Colombia: Questions for International Patients

Bottom line: Shoulder procedures can create deceptively difficult travel logistics because one arm may be immobilized, lifting can be restricted, and rehabilitation timing depends on the repair. International patients should plan clothing, luggage, bathing, transport, and home support before surgery.

Identify the exact shoulder operation

“Shoulder surgery” can mean rotator-cuff repair, instability surgery, arthroscopy, fracture fixation, or shoulder replacement. Ask for the exact procedure name, diagnosis, structures being repaired, and whether additional procedures may be performed based on findings during surgery.

Understand sling and movement restrictions

AAOS guidance for shoulder procedures shows that sling use and the timing of motion can vary with the operation and tissue quality. Ask how long the arm will be immobilized, which movements are prohibited, and when elbow, wrist, hand, and shoulder exercises begin.

Plan for one-handed travel

Think through luggage, phone use, dressing, showering, medications, food preparation, and transportation. If you normally travel alone, this is the time to decide whether a companion is necessary. Airline assistance may also be worth arranging in advance.

Ask who will supervise therapy

Shoulder rehabilitation is not interchangeable across procedures. A repaired tendon may need protection while a replacement follows a different protocol. Get the written therapy plan and arrange a clinician at home who can continue it.

Verify the surgical team and facility

Use Colombia's ReTHUS registry to verify the health professional's authorization to practice, then ask for specialty training and the exact facility. Ask who handles anesthesia and what emergency capabilities exist if the outpatient plan changes.

Build follow-up into the itinerary

Ask when the first wound review occurs, whether sutures or staples must be removed, when imaging is repeated, and what must happen before you can leave Colombia. Do not assume that “feeling okay” is the same as being cleared to fly.
