Decide what you want from the visit
Are you seeking a diagnosis, a second opinion, an injection discussion, a rehabilitation plan, or surgery? State the goal clearly before sending records. A clinic can prepare a better consultation when it knows whether you want decision support or a procedure.
Send useful records before traveling
Ask what imaging format the specialist wants, whether reports alone are sufficient, and whether prior physical-therapy notes or operative reports are relevant. Send a concise timeline of the injury, symptoms, previous treatments, and activity goals.
Look for sport- and injury-specific experience
An orthopedic surgeon who focuses on joint replacement may not be the best match for a competitive athlete's ligament problem. Ask what proportion of the clinician's work resembles your injury and goals, and verify credentials through official Colombian sources.
Use the consultation to improve your rehab plan
Even if you do not have surgery, a good visit should leave you with a diagnosis, activity limits, treatment options, and a rehabilitation direction. Ask for documentation your physical therapist at home can use.
If surgery is recommended, slow the process down
Do not let travel sunk costs pressure you into same-week surgery. Ask why surgery is recommended, what alternatives remain, what happens if you wait, and what the rehabilitation commitment looks like. If the recommendation materially differs from your home plan, a second opinion can be valuable.
Think beyond the procedure date
Athletic recovery is about milestones, not a return ticket. Ask how strength, range of motion, balance, pain, and sport-specific testing will be used to decide when you can progress.
